Selena is well aware of what she's doing and intended for her career and image to veer in this new direction. In an interview with The New York Times, Selena says being under the looming ears of Mickey Mouse made her want to get as far away from them as possible.
"Disney is a machine, and I'm grateful for it, but I feel like being part of that environment made me crave the reaction from other projects even more," Selena says. "Creatively this is where I wanted to go."
Not surprising. Child stars, especially those from Disney, typically rebel against their cookie-cutter images by going "bad" for movie and music projects; Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus, Shia LaBeouf, and Christina Aguilera, to name a few.
Vanessa echoes Selena's remarks.
"It was an amazing opportunity for us," Vanessa adds. "Selena and I are both young, finding our footing, wanting to grow."
But where she started—singing mom-and-dad-approved musical numbers on the Disney Channel—isn't where she wants to have peaked. After all, she's only 24-years-old and there are a h*ll of a lot of bikinis in this world to wear.
"I want people to look at me not as that girl from High School Musical, but as an actress they admire. With Spring Breakers I'm looking for a reaction for sure. I want to shock people."
Going off of these comments, don't expect them to be censoring their future roles anytime soon. Vanessa recently wrapped up on a desolate drama called Gimme Shelter and the Robert Rodriguez-directed Machete Kills. Not sure what the subject matter of Selena's next movie is, but let's just say that the title of it on her IMDb page is Behaving Badly.
