Pete Wentz: Drugs Destroyed My Marriage to Ashlee Simpson

 

It’s not every day you hear a celebrity taking responsibility for their actions.
On the majority of accounts it’s the exact opposite—a star deflecting an issue or shooting down a rumor—and the second your eyes get used to being constantly in the back of your head from dubiously rolling them on the daily, a Thursday comes along holding hands with Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.
Because Rolling Stone magazine is the music industry’s most in-demand therapist, Pete unwinds in its pages and confesses that his marriage to Ashlee Simpson fell apart because he relapsed on prescription pills.

 Xanax and Klonopin wedged themselves between Pete, Pete’s tongue, and his two-and-a-half year marriage, the 33-year-old said. “I was probably physically and mentally addicted. It started from insomnia and anxiety from flying, then it spiraled.”

Spiraled into an episode of “Homeland” that is: Pete became insanely paranoid while on them, saying he “had [the] house searched for bugs” on account of being “scared of everything. I thought there were always people listening to me…It was crazy.”
This relapse occurred right around the time his band went on hiatus in 2009—“I felt like a loser…I’d basically gone from being the guy in Fall Out Boy to being the guy who, like, hangs out all day…”—and if we’ve learned anything from a Bret Easton Ellis novel it’s that drugs and countless hours of free time don’t mix.
The issue was enough to drive him and Ashlee to a divorce lawyer, but once the ink and tears on that paperwork had dried, Pete elicited professional help to get sober. He also credits Bronx, his four-year-old boy with Ashlee, as the reason he finally decided he had to get it together.
