'Annie' Trailer: Here's the New Little Orphan Will Smith and Jay-Z Have for Us

The trailer for the new Annie is here, and if you were hoping it would somehow seem even more like a TV movie than the actual TV movie version, then boy are you in luck. Cameron Diaz (the new Miss Hannigan) appears thoroughly convinced she's doing a CBS sitcom. Jamie Foxx (Will Stacks, down from original character re-name "Benjamin Stacks") struggles to broadcast orphan love through so many reaction shots. Producer Jay-Z's involvement, as of yet, does not seem to have done a lot to modernize the musical numbers; Tomorrow still sounds like Tomorrow, but now there's a light drum machine backing. Young Quvenzhané Wallis does her best as the Annie of a new generation, but she can only do as much as the script gives her, and the writing team of Aline Brosh McKenna (27 Dresses, We Bought a Zoo), director Will Gluck (Fired Up, Friends with Benefits), and Emma Thompson (Emma Thompson) does not seem to be quite the murderer's row you'd suspect. In short, Annie fans are probably better off waiting for this thing to return to its natural environment, aired back-to-back on ABC Family.
