‘Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Klaus Wages War & Gets A Life-Changing Surprise

This week’s ‘Vampire Diaries’ set the stage for some hard times in the Big Easy. If The CW doesn’t pick up this spin-off, it would be a crime against television.

I don’t think we’re in Mystic Falls anymore, Toto! The April 25 episode of The Vampire Diaries — aka the back-door pilot for The Originals, which I’m crossing my fingers for harder than ever — introduced us to the “dark side” of New Orleans, where Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) former protege Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) rules the roost. You know, when he’s not rocking the karaoke mic. But Klaus and Marcel’s buddy-buddy routine fell to pieces as Klaus became resentful of his former BFF, and vowed to steal back his kingdom.
But because no Mikaelson family reunion would be complete without everyone’s favorite hair, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) showed up just in time to kill a few of Marcel’s cronies and help a brother out — literally. When he wasn’t ripping out dudes’ hearts, he was attempting to talk some sense into his irrational big brother.
And that’s when his argument got a little unexpected help…

Every King Needs A Queen — And An Heir

Remember when we were all like, ‘Why is Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) going to be a part of this spin-off? What business could she possibly have with Klaus?’ Well, hot damn, if that wasn’t answered half-way through the episode when we learned that — wait for it — the little she-wolf is PREGNANT! Even crazier, Klaus used his super-hybrid powers to hear the little creature’s heartbeat! It was a heartwarming moment… until Klaus told the witches to kill Hayley and the baby. Yikes.

It took some time, but Eli was eventually able to convince his brother that a baby wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. In fact, as Daniel told HollywoodLife.com earlier this week, a baby — or more specifically, an “heir” to Klaus’ throne — would finally bring about the Mikaelson unity he’s always wanted, and the fresh start he so desperately needs.
(Side note: The witch whose sister detected Hayley’s pregnancy, Sophie [Daniella Pineda], is A-OK in my book. Sorry, Bonnie [Kat Graham], there’s a new witch on The CW.)

The ‘Klaroline’ Moment

Despite Klaus’ baby on the way, and his potential queen, he couldn’t get Caroline (Candice Accola) off his brain.
“Caroline, I’m standing in one of my favorite places in the world … and all I can think about is how I want to show it to you,” he said in an intense — though awkwardly one-sided — phone call towards the end of the episode. “Maybe one day, you’ll let me.”
(I guess ‘Klaroline’ fans should consider that phone call to be the one bone Julie Plec threw to them this week. As much as I love abusive relationships, we all knew the couple’s ‘love’ wouldn’t be able to survive the long distance of two separate shows. See exhibits ‘Angel’ and ‘Buffy.’)

Andy’s Thoughts On ‘The Originals,’ As A Potential Series

I’m not going to lie, when the idea of a Vampire Diaries spin-off was first proposed, I had my doubts. As much as I love the Mikaelsons, I wasn’t sure they had what it took to carry their own series — but holy crap, was I wrong.
This week’s episode was so much deeper than anything we’ve seen on TVD thus far, that I completely forgot about what was happening in Mystic Falls. Yes, the potential Originals series would be about two vampire brothers with trust issues, but the problems between Klaus and Elijah are infinitely more layered than Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) petty romantic squabbles.

And New Orleans couldn’t be a more perfect setting. The history of the city connects so beautifully with Klaus and Elijah’s history. It’s all complicated and it’s all beautiful.
